Artificial intelligence is fast becoming a permanent resident in our schools. Like a new colleague, it can be helpful, occasionally brilliant, and sometimes wildly inappropriate. The critical question is not if AI will shape education, but how. The answer depends on whether teachers use it responsibly—or let the robots run the classroom while they put the kettle on.
At its core, an unethical use of AI is any shortcut that undermines a teacher’s duty to educate, protect, and treat students fairly. Here are the most common traps, grouped by the damage they cause.
Handing Over the Red Pen Entirely. Letting AI grade essays or creative projects without human review may save time, but it also risks giving students nonsense feedback and strips away the learning process. An algorithm isn’t a mentor.
Letting AI Teach the Class. Some may be tempted to outsource entire lessons to a chatbot. That’s not innovation; that’s abandoning your post.
Passing Off AI’s Work as Your Own. Teachers using ChatGPT to generate reports or lesson plans and then presenting them as original are setting a grim example. Students notice. The message is simple: dishonesty is fine, as long as it’s efficient.
Big Brother in the Classroom. Covertly tracking facial expressions and eye movements to measure “engagement” reduces students to data points and creates a culture of suspicion.
Predicting Futures with Sensitive Data. Using AI to declare who is “likely to fail” based on socioeconomic background or family history is more prophecy than pedagogy. Worse, it can trap students in self-fulfilling cycles.
Locking Students into Digital Boxes. Adaptive tools can be useful, but when they trap a student in “remedial” or “advanced” categories without room to grow, the result is inequality baked into the code.
Taking AI’s Word as Gospel. Biased software is a real problem. If a system nudges boys toward science and girls toward the arts, or stumbles over cultural dialects, the teacher must intervene. Otherwise, stereotypes get recycled at digital speed.
Pretend Empathy by Algorithm. Using AI to send personalised “friendly” notes to parents and students is not empathy; it’s imitation leather. It looks convincing, but it cracks easily under pressure.
Letting AI Deliver Bad News. No student should hear negative feedback from a bot. Criticism is delicate work, best delivered by a human being with the ability to soften the blow.
Fabricating Data. Using AI to invent student work or inflate teaching outcomes isn’t clever; it’s fraud.
Violating Copyright. Passing off AI-generated rewrites of textbooks or colleagues’ materials as your own crosses both ethical and legal lines.
In all these cases, the teacher has effectively handed the keys of the classroom to the machine. They stop exercising professional judgment, empathy, and responsibility. AI becomes the driver; the teacher is reduced to a passenger in their own profession.
But ethical use turns that relationship around. The teacher stays in charge. AI is an assistant, not a replacement.
Brainstorming, Not Ghostwriting. Use AI to draft a lesson plan, then edit and personalise it. The machine provides the clay; the teacher does the sculpting.
Spotting Patterns, Not Giving Grades. Let AI highlight that five students struggled with fractions, but keep the responsibility of grading and feedback in human hands.
Transparency with Students. Show learners how AI works, where it goes wrong, and how to use it critically. This isn’t just teaching content—it’s teaching citizenship in a digital age.
AI is here to stay, and in many ways, that’s a gift. It can ease workloads, inspire creativity, and give teachers new tools. But there’s a line: the moment AI use stops serving the student’s best interests, learning, and dignity, it ceases to be ethical.
Teaching has always been about more than information transfer. It’s about guiding young people, helping them see themselves as capable, and showing them what it means to be human in a complex world. Machines can support that mission, but they cannot replace it.
The choice is clear: use AI wisely, with empathy and integrity, or risk letting the robots take over the very heart of education.
